A summer party in a marquee, followed from the first drinks on the lawn to the dance floor late in the night. Almost all of it was shot as it happened, with very little posing.
The colour belongs to the event’s own lighting: magenta, amber, violet, green and blue. The pictures keep it instead of correcting it, so the set moves through the night the way the light did.
05.02
Early evening on the lawn, before the music. Two guests lean at a high table with drinks, trees behind them. Natural light and muted colour set a calm starting point for everything that follows.
05.03
Three friends pulled into one embrace, one planting a kiss on another's cheek. Violet light through the marquee lining wraps them in colour, and the half-smile in the middle carries the picture.
05.04
A long hug on the dance floor, lit by two spotlights cutting through the haze. The chequered floor and the drum kit behind put it in the thick of the party.
05.05
The crowd from behind, arms up, facing the stage. Orange and violet light spills through the haze and turns separate dancers into one shape.
05.06
Lit entirely in magenta, a dancer turns with eyes closed and hair falling forward. Figures cropped at the edges keep her surrounded.
05.07
Green light, a mirror ball and raised phones. The wide frame catches the peak of a song, with everyone reaching up at once.
05.08
The DJ in profile, backlit by an amber spot that blooms through the smoke. Only the silhouette and the decks stay sharp.
05.09
An arm raised into the haze above the decks. The light rig behind forms a halo, and the moment reads as pure release.
05.10
The DJ smiles out at the crowd, one hand in the air, as a guest leans in below. Paler light makes this the clearest face of the night.
05.11
Two cowboy hats in silhouette against a wall of orange light. Shot from behind, the guests become shapes, and the hats state the theme without a single face.
05.12
The DJ almost dissolves into a yellow flare, the lighting truss framing the left edge. Shooting into the light keeps the heat of the moment.
05.13
Everything turns blue. Glowing sunglasses and clapping hands are the only defined shapes, and the picture becomes colour and gesture.
05.14
A saxophonist plays in the middle of the dance floor, surrounded by guests in white. The framing puts the music among the crowd, off the stage.
05.15
A beat later, eyes shut on a long note. Next to the previous frame it reads as a short sequence.
05.16
The widest view of the marquee, the mirror ball hanging at the apex of the pink ceiling. The draped lines of the roof converge on the ball and draw the eye up from the crowd.
05.17
The bar late in the night, faces lit blue from below and pink from above. A busy, layered frame to close the party.
